OPEN POSTS WEEK TWENTY

A 14% turnout is a bit low but it was good enough to have Sapataro ousted. IMHO the “Cheap Seats” comment did him in as posters and bloggers seemed to pounce on that. Word does get around. Congratulations of the winners, best efforts by the losers and a thank you to Steven Spataro. You may continue your observations of the recent election on week twenty.

The BOS is always a target and now two new victims start Monday.

I wonder how close the write-in campaign did?

Is Roger Brunelle our local answer for Marian Walsh? The article in the Enterprise on Saturday showed we are getting little bang for the buck unless you add in his 298K Let the body of work speak and that is the PTWS that was developed by a high school kid and has not been updated. Bumpkin managed to bang out a respectable looking site in a short time and that was rejected. I have no idea if outsourcing would be cost effective but I can think of a savings of around $85,000 right away.

WOW spent a few days in Europe and it turned out rather well for him. The big news was another nuclear reduction with the Russians and the Europeans tossing a trillion of their own funny money towards the financial mess. Obama did his best to act statesman like and did a commendable job. But controversy did follow him as the other side of the partnership met with the Queen of England. No - not Elton John - the real Queen. Seems like what stirred the pot was the informal greeting by The First Lady. Bravo to her as the Queen seemed to enjoy it and probably secretly wishes TFL was part of the royal brood. Be quite an upgrade IMO.

Post away.

I added my post-election impressions on Heckuva Blgospot.

Reading a week 19 post about how Jessie and our newest selectman don't agree politically and how this was demonstrated on the Middleboro Review comments, I looked at her blog and see they can't get off flogging me for something I didn't say.

I just found Hal Brown's comment mentioned earlier.

The man is clearly out of touch.

Everyone else gets this issue except Hal.

Can someone explain it to him?

My comment on The Enterprise:

Could The Enterprise follow-up on how other similar town's IT departments compare to Middleboro's. According to our IT director it seems as if ours would cost the taxpayer only about $18,000 for 2010.

I don't follow this reasoning since he seems to be deducting the $298,000 billed to other town departments from his own proposed 2010 budget of $316,000.

I may be many things to some of them, but do they think I am utterly stupid too? Of course I understand that the taxpayers end up footing the entire IT budget. My comment is clearly addressed to The Enterprise and asks them to follow up on getting Roger to explain his reasoning.

I noticed on Middleboro Review that Jessie Powell has no concern about respecting copyright and posts entire articles copies from newspapers.

Hal

You just noticed this about Jessie? LMCAO! Her and Steve are on opposite ends of the political spectrum and they only issue they possibly agree on is anti casino.

I look at the votes and I can still see that anti/pro trend but a lot closer. Rullo is a independant voice but my understanding was he's a pro. Stevens lost by about 50 and Wayne won by about 50 but the one that goes against that trend is McKinnon. IMO it was the Spataro comment that swung enough votes.

Both McKinnon and Rullo have a financial background so maybe Mimi can sit between them?

bogofree said...

Same as my thoughts, Anon. Disappointing turnout.

Cheap seats comment lost me. Certain folks may be a pain week after week but sooner or later it could be you or I facing the same situation and getting the same treatment.

I see the state police have impounded the ballots so that the write-in count is well observed.

Week 20 I've changed my name I'm "ready to catch a fish" now..

You have got to love the saga in the media and on the blogs.. everything is about the casino. As I see it until steel is in the ground or The tribe says its over this casino debate will just linger on.

BOGO if you will let me tag along, I would like to go to a baseball game this year. I have not gone in a very very long time.. It might be a good change.

On another note I won't post a picture without someones permission but I have to say she is a beautiful woman when seen in person.

I always had this nasty creature like vision of her. I made up in my mind.

I stood 50 yards from her yesterday and I couldn't get over how attractive she is.

Maybe we can try a Rox game? Much cheaper and the beer is just $3. I'm had a ticket via my daughter for 4/8. Yeah...nightgame at Fenway Dump in early April. Forget that.

The new members of the BOS have a lot more to deal with than a casino that is years away - and maybe never. The state is already whining about a 3.5 Billion dollar cut - please don't touch hackerama! The loss will be absorbed locally and all the smoke and mirrors of Bailout/Stimulus will not make it evaporate unless the economy goes 180 degrees. Don't count on that.

The BOS has contracts to deal with and that health care will be a nightmare.

I do want to remind anybody and everybody that if you are in a location where you don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy, your picture can legally be taken and published without your permission.

Most of us have been photographed by the media and many of us have been shown in group shots in newspapers and on TV. I even had this picture of me published by the Globe when I went with Mike to the anti-casino rally at the statehouse.

This practice of not using names when referring to people, especially those who are well known, on blog posts is just a convention. It makes no sense since regular readers know who the initials stand for and new readers are unnecessarily confused. There are no hard and fast rules of "netiquitte" despite what Mary Tufts aka Glady Kravitz says, and in any case they are always evolving

Pictures and references to people using their names are two versions of telling it like it is.

I'd never mess with you. Ballots have been transfered to a secure government location - GITMO, I understand. I spoke to someone who spoke to someone whose hairdresser has an uncle who has a friend on the State Police and I have a scoop! It's not the BOS or SC or even TM that is the issue it is all about fraud possibilities on the write-in for FinCom. This is even bigger - much bigger - than any Town Meeting From Hell ballot stuffing. This is bigger than hanging chads! They reported a large set man riding a bike and wearing a turkey feather was stuffing ballot boxes with Vote Baldwin stickers.

Hopefully Mr. Stevens will apply for appointment to the Fin Com as well.

One of the hardest things to figure out is what things your board has control over. Town Meeting Rules the roost on most issues.

These guys generally hang on my every word and discuss/dissect every post, comment, and column that I publish. On the weeks that my Gazette column appears, they're in a tizzy for days in anticipation.

All this attention simply because I oppose a project most of them stand to gain from personally.

As the election approached, a Mr. Don Baldwin also staged a write-in campaign for himself. I endorsed him and announced that I wouldn't accept the FinCom seat if I won. Is BB going to make this accusation more clear. Who are "Most of them" that will gain from it personally?

I honestly could not care less if someone is pro or anti. It is completely irrelevant. The types of things that get my attention are:

*generally agreeing that Middleboro citizens are third rate d*psh*ts

*Saying the CPA is an IQ test for the town

*Trespassing for really cool turkey feathers and saying you missed about two hundred signs three times.

*Saying we have no idea what sacrifice is (maybe he is lucky not to be walking in other’s shoes)

*Saying "In the meantime, it's clear the CPA opponents, at least the ones at the BOS meeting don't actually want discussion of CPA, they want it stopped." AND “more video to come”

What happened to the more video?

The list goes on.
_______

It is great that people both opposed and supported the casino. That is democracy. Most of us are very sick of people relating everything in the town to the prospect of casino.

I follow Wareham news because we have good friends there. Want to see what another town is dealing with...

Their town elections are Tuesday. Here's a quote:

That’s no exaggeration. The stakes really are that high. By Tuesday night we will finally know if the will of the people is stronger than the will of special interest groups.
It may sound a bit dramatic to call this the battle for Wareham’s soul, but it’s not. So much is riding on the outcome of Tuesday’s local election that it could hardly be overstated. Time is running out on the power elite, and they know it. This is their last chance to end the investigations into the deep-rooted corruption that wounded this wonderful town for so very long. This is the last chance for them to sweep the sins of the past under the rug once and for all.

Think there's controversy here. In Wareham the police chief sued the newspaper for defamation. It was just dismissed as a SLAPP (strategic litigation against public participation) lawsuit is "a lawsuit that is intended to intimidate and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense until they abandon their criticism or opposition.)

They also just fired their town accountant for "issuing a $35,000 check to former town administrator Michael Hartman without proper approval."

Someone gets a name and it will get pillfered or with so many now on the 'net you have to add to it so you can use it. I just looked at Mark's bog and noticed that some posters could use a lesson in good online manners.

Smoking Owl (is that Jessie?) is calling people here "rats on a sinking ship". "Anonymous" takes the insults a step further and calls people who wrote in the other FinCom candidate "miscreants".

Of course this isn't new on the local blogs. People that are nice to each other in person hurl insults with abandon online, especially when they're hiding behind phony names.

Thinking about why some posters can't seem to resist calling people they don't like and/or disagree with names they'd never tolerate from their own children, I looked up flaming on Wikipedia:

I thought this, from Wikipedia, was interesting:

Causes of flaming

There is no general agreement on the causes of flaming, although a recent study has led to somewhat conclusive evidence.

Some common hypotheses are:

Some forms of flaming can be attributed to deeper social or psychological weaknesses, probably from lack of exposure to a broader spectrum of disciplines that result in self-control issues.

It is noted that Internet users are more likely to flame online than insult others in the real world, as the latter can lead to embarrassment and physical altercations, which online "anonymity" can avoid.

Those guilty of flaming may justify it as getting even for having had their feelings hurt initially, so they see it as doing justice by inflicting serious emotional distress on another.[citation needed]
Some flaming may be done with no stronger motive than to get a reaction from the target of the flame, or for the feeling of power or moral freedom of causing emotional distress to another.

bogofree said...

Anon:

Smoking Owl deleted that comment and apologized for it. Old news.

Our five posters are by far the most literate and informed in Middleboro. A very egalitarian group.

The failing of BB are well documented and legendary. Unlike me - he has flaws. My only possible flaw has been using my good looks to coast by in life.

BB would not have made a good member of FinCom. A disaster and he has just about said so. I would not vote for a candidate with such a limited financial background as Baldwin. His statement of “Being good with numbers” as a qualification I just found troubling. I have had students score 260+ on MCAS because they were “good with numbers.”

I assume I am being classified as a rat? I don’t support a casino so that must not be it. Maybe it is the title of this blog? Don’t know as Smoking Owl is welcome to post and explain why I am classified as such? So in that case I have no ship to jump. Nor do many on this site who are pro, anti and neutral. Maybe Smoking Owl is discussing Middleboro casino.com? Site is up and running as is Casino-friend. The only failed site was the CFO site that died a painful death. Self-inflicted.

Again, Smoking Owl and others who limit themselves to a mutual back slapping society are welcome here. Do war with Limo or Hal.

This article was in The Herald today. I found the quote by Rich Young of interest since he is not disputing the findings.

I'm confused where are the questions supposed to be posted?

BB Blog?

Hal Brown said...

The questions are posted HERE on his blog.

I don't see any MR question. Where is it?

Anonymous said...

MR was confused as I was I posted my question on Glady's blog.. LOL!

anonymous said...

Adam did this a year ago on nemasket and then disappeared. Questions in advance so he can pick his spots which is like a leopard.

Bogo asked a few question on the AB blog and he answered them.

Maybe Adam can have a column in the Gazette? They waste space with Bumpkin so why not Adam?

This is a quote by nocasino on Bond and it sums up everything. Bond came into Middleboro to make a name for himself and he certainly has. Look at his track record. LOL! I may disagree with nocasino and Gladys but they have had this guy pegged from day one.

"This mans ego knows no bounds. I would post on his site but it doesn't get posted unless you agree with his position.

Where was all this talk when he was the point person? This is Monday morning quarterbacking, by the starting quarterback.

An opportunist. The ultimate braying mule."

bogofree said...

Adam Bond has answered questions I have asked so I submitted the following two.

When you enter a billion dollar plus deal you have to know your partners. You know that from your days on The Street. The flags were already up on the Tribe management. There were internal issues and accusations that would lead any savvy investor (town) to dig a bit deeper - especially on the financials. Why was no investigation done on Glenn "The Raven" Marshall?

You were reported to have made some negative off-handed comments at the TMFH that were reported on various blogs. Is that correct? I believe it went something like "They are idiots if they don't accept this."

Sorry - two questions. Answer both or pick one.

My one question,

Why is CST tracking everyones IP's?

Hal Brown said...

He's enabled the display of the poster's own IP and may be able to see the IP address of everyone who logs onto the blog.

In that case, for example, If he knows my IP, he can see when I read his blog. He'd also be able to tell how many hits his blog gets.

He can't tell how many people listen to his radio show. This give him another measure of the audience for his opinions.

I don't do that on any of my personal websites or blogs, but that is a built in function on the Middleboro Matters message board whether I show IPs or not.

I don't think there anything unusual about wanting your blog to be read and paying attention to hits. I follow this on Capitol Hill Blue to see what subjects people are interested in and to see when I need to write a new column.

I don't assume without evidence that anyone has a nefarious motivation for being curious about who is reading their blog.

Bogo, if the lead lawyer negotiator on any big deal did not do their homework and put their client in a bind or to cause money loss, the client would sue.

So either the town's "lead negotiator" did his homework and knew about bad things and chose not to tell the public (but possibly others) until now or he didn't do his proper research or call the cape cod times and the client should be mad at the possible malpractice.

The stuff about Marshall and about the tribe was all public. Hal had a link to something about how the cape cod times had the information years ago.

Now he blame others.

Oh yeah Bogo, as a retired person I resent the comments about retired people should go fishing or what ever that idiot said. If Bond hates old people that's his problem. Stay out of Oak Point.

bogofree said...

Rocky

Didn't Bond make a big push at OP when he ran for office?

I hate fishing. Hate it. But I like retirement.

I agree on the info. I found "stuff" on Raven with just my limited search skills. There was enough to question.

Revisionist history at work, Rocky.

Rocky said...

He pushed at Oak Point. Pander is more like it. Tell the people what they want to hear and then let the real feelings show when he tells someone they should stay retired because they are too old.

Hey, Bumpkin, you left out confirmed liar in your JP quote.

"The interview ends, and Bond’s wife and producer, Victoria, escorts Frank out.

“Did you enjoy yourself?” she asks, as they ride down in a cramped elevator together.

Frank shoots her a glowering look. “No,” he replies curtly

Outside, Victoria tries to apologize; her husband didn’t mean to offend, she says. Frank, unmoved, disappears into a late-model S.U.V.  The producer returns to the studio, her eyes full of tears"

Old Bondo answering some questions. Love it. I've made a few mistakes but it's all the other guys.

Bumpkin quoting Jessie Powell. That just shows you the level he's at. Otherwise it was a nice column.

Misuse of Nexis Software is in the news. Looking up info they should not look up in a school system. Wonder if JP and MT bought that stuff?

Nice poem, Suo. Clarking funny. Another Bumpkin diss? Certain people can dish it out but can't take it.

anonymous said...

I'll admit it. I buy the Gazette to read BB. Not that he is entertaining but because I support the casino and still do. After several months I'll not stop buying since I find his articles of little interest. Now he quotes JP! I have no idea what Jane Lopes was thinking?

Suo Mynona said...

I have yet to read the Gazette. It appears Old MacBB made some funny comments to make everyone laugh?

Was it an organic column, free from bellicose remarks?

My interest is really piqued I can hardly wait. It almost makes me want to go out and trespass.

Suo Mynona said...

Old MacBB did such a good job making a rap song about the cheap seats comments maybe he can make one about himself and whorehouses, d*psh*ts, and trespassing.

Old MacBB had a.......

(PS the cheap seats commnent was wrong. But Old MacBB has many far worse comments about the average Middleboro citizen)

bogofree said...

What a lousy game. I read the column and the fun part was his quoting Jessie! Talk about a credibility gap! LMCAO!

I guess we'll hsve to wait for further disection from Suo on the column.Suo is our main mean spirited poster. Rocky is close, though.

Adam Bond has been taking questions and answering them.

Keeping Suo away from a BB column would be like telling a dog to disregard a New York Strip Sirloin.

Old MacBB Column Review

He did a good job.

It looks like Old MacBB produced the type of article he was brought on to write: Middleboro as viewed through the "casino prism" -- a good article in that regard. It will engage many who understandably hang on every latest shred, occurrence and machination of all things casino related. “All Casino All The Time." Similar to when the Boston Globe had a daily column called “All OJ All The Time.”

The strident pros and antis need to step back realize that the bulk of the town’s population does not view everything and everyone through a casino prism.

I have previously noted that BB knows more about the casino than I ever will. Now Old MacBB just needs to realize that some people know more about certain things than he does. He needs to learn it does not mean you have failed “an IQ test” or are a third rate d*psh*t citizen if you disagree with him.

++++++++++
Bogo called me mean spirited. Oh the depths to which I must be sinking. Where is my nitrox scuba tank -- maybe I will even need tri-mix gas?

I still believe that Old MacBB insulting the townspeople is wrong. For that I make no apologies.

Suo,
Do you dive? I am putting together my equipment now, Matter of fact I'm picking up my tanks and regulator soon from the shop.

Thats my real hobby, I love diving Last year I had my 5 year old sitting on the bottom of the pool with me. We were just sitting there looking at each other doing the hands signals I would signal you OK? He would put his thumb up LOL!

This year I got him his own set up by 8-9 years old I plan on an open water dive up the NIP with him. Maybe sooner he loves it.

By summer I should have a complete set of equipment. I really just need a wet suit, I have everything else.

If you ever want to go up the North Shore and get lobsters let me know I'll put in for a 10 pot licence thats just a matter of doing online.

I know some good spots around Revere, Marblehead areas.

Anonymous said...

I hope this works.

Down in Aruba I seen sights like this. I would really like to dive Costa Rica or Australia Great White cage diving. I also want to dive Cuttyhunk and see Stripers.

RI to see Fluke attacking there prey. They say Fluke is the most predatory fish. I always thought Blues were tough until I seen films on Fluke.

This is why people dive

Adam is accepting questions so go to his blog and feed his ego. He's having an ego contest with Bumpkin.

I consider one of the most reprehensible, noxious, and defamatory posts about me yet to date, one that not only disparages my professionalism but my sensitivity to the feelings of people with disabilities.

How is an anonymous poster worse than you standing and gawking at some of the clients that I have brought to the YMCA when you should know better as a professional?

As I think all of you know, I would never stand and gawk at any of the several people that come to the Y with people who are caregivers of one kind or another.

Unless it totally slipped my mind, I don't think I ever saw Jessie at the Y, let alone more than once as the post implies.

By chance, just an hour ago when I went to swim (but didn't because the lane was being used) I think I saw her van parked neared to the entrance but I didn't see her inside.

I believe an explanation of this horrible accusation is called for.

The link to Nemasket.net, where Jessie has a lot more to say about me, is here.

Many of us wish not to sign up at Nemasket.net. You need to be registered to post and to read.

Consider, Hal, who posted the comment.

Looks like you have infringed on her territory, Hal. This will be as productive as posting did with MT.

Hal

Put those posts from Jessie out on your blog. Maybe even post them here as this is an open board. Both places.

Hal, I have some serious differences with you regarding supporting a casino and you professional status but this is so far over the top it needs to be addressed. Away from casino issues I find your posts informative and your humor more profound.

Is it worse than anything I posted on you? I'll be #2...but, then again, many folks have already said I'm a #2.

bogofree said...

Suo is once again reminding us all of the old axiom of do as I say not as I do.

Hal Brown said...

Yes, I am sure she wrote that. I try to respect creative rights by not copying posts from other blogs without permission.

She now says I stood by the side of the pool and stared at some special needs people she had in the water a few times, far different from gawking. I didn't recognize her.

I don't deny seeing special needs people in the pool, often with their caregivers. I also sometimes stand and talk to the life guards after swimming.

It makes sense that I'd be looking at whoever is swimming in the pool considering the fact that the life guard is always supposed to be watching the pool if there are people in it, not the person they are talking to.

So we have conversations with us both looking at the people in the pool.

Not to condemn any one person because this holds true for everyone myself included: it's very common to look for the worst in a person's behavior if that's what you expect from them. People may not be conscious of doing this but they can easily misinterpret what they see.

The Easter Bunny said...

Hal

You may be within your legal rights to take pictures of whomever you want whenever you want even without their permission. It is damned rude, however, and disrespects people's privacy.

As to the other matter of your "gawking at people with disabilities", I believe that was a figment of MR's imagination. From what little I know of you, I honestly believe you are more sensitive than that. MR is looking for an excuse to besmirch your reputation, and if you ask me that accusation is a pretty low blow.

Hal,
Please don't ever take a picture of her in the pool.

That might be a little much.

Hal Brown said...

With a few exceptions, people should have no expectation that they won't have their picture taken and published when in a public place.

I am surprised anybody posting here would take this stance.

I'm not talking about paparazzi. I'm referring to candid photography of ordinary people going about their lives or participating in great events has a long tradition as an art form.

I suggest those who disagree look up street photography on Wikipedia.

One of the most famous such pictures by Alfred Eisenstaedt taken in Time Square on VJ Day is on the right.

You are not going to post information that may put your position in a negative light. Seems to be a history with some.

Hal...you are wasting your time attempting to have a reasonable discussion with folks that sincerely dislike you.

Hal Brown said...

It's not going to kill me to attempt to have a civil dialogue. The only cost for me is a little time and effort, and the potential benefit should go without saying.

It's unlikely anybody will change their minds, whether about me or my opinions.

If they dislike me, I suggest that understanding the point of view of someone you both disagree with and dislike can be worthwhile endeavor.

We have seen bad behavior on both sides. I admit some of my behavior taking pictures was rude. I made the decision to document events despite people's objections. I don't think the other allegations against me hold much or any weight.

It would be nice if people on both sides were willing to be honest about things they did which made others uncomfortable or angry.

I appreciate your willingness not to photograph and publish pics of people who object. As a woman, I would be very upset to see an image of me on a blog where my hair, make-up, and clothes were unbecoming. There is a lot of truth in the old adage, "Vanity, thy name is woman".

Bogo is right about how fruitless it is to try to have a discussion with someone who has it out for you. It just seems to give them more ammunition to further target you.

Hal Brown said...

Mildly,

You must have misunderstood. I decide what to publish based on how interesting the subject is and whether I think it tells a story.

When I just want to show who someone is I usually have several pictures to choose from and I pick one that is flattering.

I will at times be perceived as rude and inconsiderate in my photo taking.

This is always a balance. I plan to write more about this on Heckuva Blog.

skeptical not cynical said...

You're right, Hal, I did misunderstand what you wrote.

Being a very camera shy person who doesn't like to be the center of attention, I would not like to see a close up of me on the internet. Fortunately, I am not newsworthy and have learned to blend into a crowd........no change that....I tend to avoid large crowds.

As to who should be considered a journalist.....I guess that Dan Kennedy has made me realize that the lines have become blurred with the dawn of the age of documentation by blogging.

I guess I can see both points of view in this argument.
