OPEN POST TWENTY-THREE

The Dal and Bogo show were in full bloom with constant pounding of Jessie and her personal binky - The Great Shunner - over a variety of questionable “information” posted by Jessie. Clark was constantly being mentioned with various links to Clark’s that could be found. Bumpkin demonstrated his programming skills by having Clark replaced by Anywhere. This is the following result:

“Senator Joe Biden, General Wesley Anywhere, New Mexico Governor Elliot Richardson, who each have extensive foreign policy experience. “

That was by a post by Jessie. Ah….Roger could not have done better! No wonder the town didn’t want the web site. We have not located General Anywhere but have located General Clark. A great moment by the self professed “Best site in town!” LOL!

The Legislators will give in to all the public pressure and increase taxes. Well…if you consider the unions representative of “public pressure.” Remember - “It’s for the children.” Naturally they will find the most regressive taxes possible to keep all those assorted nephews and nieces in the trough.

With a potential increase in sales tax it will be even more attractive to shop in New Hampshire. Maybe Limo can organize bus trips? Doesn’t seem his Middleboro casino gig is going anywhere.

Hal continues to delight all with his astounding forays into areas that should be investigated, shut and sealed by the EPA.

Post away

I have a series of pictures my fingers couldn't help snapping of a shapely woman sunbathing on the grass in the Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park in Boston. Her bikini left very little to the imagination.

I'm not posting them because someone desperate for something actually true to accuse me of might say I'm a flaming heterosexual who sometimes gawks at a surprising public display of distaff near nudity.

Oh, and so you don't have to ask, I was walking with my wife when I took the photos.

I do think the male butt crack photos are amusing but taking them has become a cliche because lots of amateur and professional photographers have done this.

I read the first three paragraphs and most of it flew over my head. What week of posts is this all about?

As for claims of superiority by one or another blogger, our local blog swamp isn't the Everglades and our alligators are more like salamanders. The quest for number one isn't the Olympic Gold or the Super Bowl or World Series (of baseball or poker).

My sage advice to bloggers is to use the medium to espouse causes you believe in or to have fun or both.

I think about business, 28 years, driving, 7 years as an owner and Yesterday 5 hour drive with a bunch of drinkers, watching porn and carrying on, dropped them off, I slept in the back of the Van, Took a bird bath in a sink, changed in a toilet stall and had my breakfast prepared by a bunch of people I couldn't understand, smoked a fake ciggerette and at 10:30 AM I'll pick them up for a 5 hour ride home.

Going to take a ride over to Ground zero and I'll say a prayer and just thank God I can write on Bogos blog this morning..

I think it is terrific that you are getting into running. Bogo used to be a damn fast marathon runner but he probably won't brag about it here. I used to run but d stopped when the Australian Shepherd dog who kept me motivated even during blizzards in Michigan died.

Two pieces of advice I think Bogo will agree with.

One is not to skimp on quality running shoes and if possible buy them from a store that has a salesperson who runs. Best bet is to go to Boston's Bill Rogers store.

Also, they wear out slowly but surely, you don't notice, so keep track of how many miles you put on them.

The second is that while there is the danger of cars on roads, on trails one small rock or root and you can hurt yourself badly enough to put yourself out of commission for a long time.

It's good to have a back-up exercise like an elliptical machine or stationary bike.

P.S. Nothing personal with the avatar but I couldn't resist it.

Hal Brown said...

For those who haven't tried, you can click avatars to enlarge them, so to read the writing on the one above click it.

As for computer and other electronic device disposal, the Plymouth County Conservation District has one coming up on May 2 (click here for charges per item).

It's too bad there's a cost involved since this idea is to prevent tossing them by the side of the road obviously some people not only want to wait in line at something like this but don't want to spend $10 -25 per item.

(I'm glad Bogo is going to throw his on Tispiquin, not Tispaquin, street).

Hal Brown said...

On my so-called death wish...

One of the things that led me to becoming a therapist instead of a doctor (aside from hating the two terms of the first rote memory course, zoology, which I had to take for pre-med) was curiosity about how the mind worked. This included how people used the various defense mechanisms to avoid anxiety, cognitive dissonance and to keep traumatic memories repressed.

The same time I was considering medicine I was taking undergrad psychology courses and found that not only were they interesting to me but there weren't any five syllable terms to memorize.

I knew if I went to medical school I'd have to learn words like Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis and Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism.

With clients understanding how their thought process works is important.

Unlike in political discourse, persuasion from me is meant to help them not to engage in harmful behavior and thought patterns.

I am often fascinated by how the people I engage in online debate react to my trying to get them to, at the very least, write something back that shows they understand my perspective.

It is interesting how clients never attack me personally when I try to help them if they insist I'm wrong about how they engage in risky or self-defeating behavior (drinking and dating abusive men are two common examples in my practice).

Online with the local blogs it is quite different.

2 miles

Sounds like you were at a Grogfathers function only quieter.

Inserts are always good for running shoes. Probably the best shoe you can buy is the New Balance 990 - if it is still called that. New Balance was in and still is in the ortho market so the technology was transferred to their shoes. I used them for training and that was 25+ years ago and they were $100 back then. Bought a pair that I think was called 992 a few years ago and it is a heavy shoe. Excellent for road or trails. Have or had (not sure) an outlet in Brighton. I used Nike Terra's for road races. These were ultra light shoes that weighed just a few ounces each. Had a great feel to them. Not a fan of Nike shoes or company but that was the best racing shoe I ever had and they discontinued them years ago.

As Hal said watch the wear. Most shoes break down at 500 miles. Look at the toe of the shoe as the wear pattern will give you an idea of how you are running. Like tires on a car can tell if you need a wheel balancing.

I have been using Reebok Classics for years. Real cheap shoe but wears well. The last batch I bought was at the outlet store and ended up with 3 pairs that cost $14 a shoe. Had a buy two get one free and my AAA card gave me another discount. These shoes are also easy to modify for me. I have to have a special lift inserted at a tapered 1/2 inch angle. Cobbler does it and it costs $85. So the shoe ends up costing $100. Have New Balance sneakers that the same work is done on. Use them as casual shoes.

Running has an obsessive quality about it - much like some obsess over this site, Hal, Suo and so on. I ran some distance races such as the marathon and it physically broke me down. I got into running to maintain basketball cardio and ended up over training. The combination of running 60-100 miles a week and basketball daily broke my Achilles down. After my first surgery I just ran for fun since I knew I could never approach the performance level I once had. So today I might grab the dogs and head down to Freetown for some trails I know that represent New England nature at its best.

Hal Brown said...

Here's another piece of running shoe advice. Go to Bill Rodger's Running Center (link) for your next pair of shoes - which I recommend because I think he only hires runners.

Be sure to wear or bring the shoes you have been running in.

The staff can look at them and determine what kind of runner you are by the wear pattern, and suggest the best new pair of shoes for you.

The proper shoes can make an amazing difference. You will probably feel it the first time you use them if the previous shoes weren't right for you.

I laughed so hard at the line form the movie "Frost/Nixon" when Nixon asks Frost (before they go on air) if he was out "fornicating" the night before. Then he looks disdainfully at Frost's Italian leather loafer style shoes and remarks that was what he thought "fags" wore. In the end (after he pummels him on Watergate), Frost gives the ex-president a pair as a gift.

Hal Brown said...

You can look up schmuck in any Yiddish dictionary and on Wikipedia; but in practice when I was a teenager a day didn't go by when we didn't we use the word. None of these definitions really fit except jerk.

Mostly we used it referring to each other, as in "don't be a schmuck" or "you're a schmuck". The meaning was similar to "doofus" which we also used a lot.

Only when we referred to someone we didn't like did it take on the negative meaning which mostly was more like being jerk without the redeeming features of the jerks we liked.

Contemptible is one of the listed meaning. We were so innocent and mostly forgiving in those days even if contemptible was in our working vocabularies (and it wasn't) I can't think of a single kid we'd use it to describe.

Hal Brown said...

Dog,

Even if you can find a new PC with Windows XP you should consider that the company has said they will be phasing it out by the end of the year See article here.I have two Macs and suggest you getting one. Most objective experts consider them better overall even if they are more expensive.

You have to ask yourself how much is your time and frustration worth if you get a PC and it has problems.

If you must get a PC I'd go with VISTA even with the glitches because eventually Microsoft will get around to fixing them.

They don't have much economic incentive for continuing to support Windows XP for very long.

Suo Mynona said...

Make sure you get vista 32 bit and not 64 bit if you use a Palm Pilot and synchronize it with your PC.

Hal Brown said...

As for waiting until Microsoft replaces VISTA with the next operating system I'd say it probably doesn't matter because you can probably upgrade for about $100.

The tech press has been speculating about what Microsoft is up to ( this article of many examples).

All this uncertainty can be bypassed if you just get a Mac.

Hal Brown said...

Plus, you get to say to other Apple users "I'm a Mac person". You don't here anyone saying "I'm a PC person" when they talk tech.

The current Mac operating system is Leopard (link). I case you haven't followed their naming scheme it is always wild cats.

It is an excellent system.

In a year it is due to be replaced with Snow Leopard about which Apple says:

... Mac OS X changes more than its spots, it changes focus. Taking a break from adding new features, Snow Leopard — scheduled to ship in about a year — builds on Leopard’s enormous innovations by delivering a new generation of core software technologies that will streamline Mac OS X, enhance its performance, and set new standards for quality. Snow Leopard dramatically reduces the footprint of Mac OS X, making it even more efficient for users, and giving them back valuable hard drive space for their music and photos."More on Snow Leopard.

Suo Mynona said...

Don't count on it. Large scale contracts have a way of working differently than intuition or expectations would dictate.

I am not getting into a casino debate. Just speaking on construction contracts in general. Much more money flows out state than one may think.

Massachusetts has higher construction costs than do some surrounding states -- or even distant state contractors.

On public projects things go to the lowest bidder. The bidder has to pay prevailing wages, not true union wages.

On private jobs things are "valued engineered." Frequently it is a euphemistic phrase.

Here is a question,
The online addition of the Brockton Enterprise freezes up all the time when I try and read it, takes forever, its like this on 3 computers that I own, It dosn't happen on any other websites, I was just wondering does anyone else have this problem?

Hal Brown said...

Try The Patriot Ledger and see if you have the same problem. It is a similar page. Both have a fair amount of script on them that may slow the loading.

Then go to your Preferences panel and find the menu which has checkboxes for plug-ins, java, javascript and pop-ups. Check all of them and try The Enterprise again.

If it loads faster then that was the problem.

The go back and uncheck all the boxes except for pop-ups.

You need java and javascript for lots of the other websites you use including this one.

Hal Brown said...

Here's a simple way to just check the speed you can open a website page that doesn't have any fancy code on it but does have many pictures.

It takes me a few seconds with a new laptop to download this page because it has some many images.

It takes my laptop one second to open Cute Overload.See how long it takes on your computers.

It looks like the state will be raising the sales tax to help with revenue shortfalls. At least that doesn't tax food. Like a gasoline tax it still hits everyone. People of average means may buy less and thus slow down economic growth.

I have always thought that the fairest tax was the graduated income tax so the rich pay proportionally more.

Of course the loopholes they exclusively use need to be eliminated.

Investment tax credits and ways to encourage small should remain.

I can see a case for totally eliminating the gas tax because even those who don't drive pay for it as it is added into cost of just about everything they buy.

bogofree said...

Hal

I have always viewed the sales tax as very regressive. I have been the old line "flat taxer" for years. Flat tax with a huge upfront exemption. As far as extreme wealthy I'd be ticked off if I was a member of the seven figure club. No worry at that.

National tax codes are a disaster all across the board. Reform is a no no since every group with even the remotest special interest exerts their infuence.

As far as the situation in Massachuseets it is totally out of control. Talk about a system in need of a strip down and rebuild. Why even highlight the abuses? Too many.

Hal Brown said...

You noticed the spelling mistakes in my first two attempts to post this morning.

I don't know about the ramifications of a graduated vs. a flat income tax. I just believe taxation ought to be fair for all.

I can't see scrapping income tax and just replacing it with other kinds of taxes and more fees.

I can see a few usage fees but sometimes they create more problems. An example I've discussed with Bogo is dump fees. The more the dump charges the more it seems people dump illegally.

Some things just don't make sense. It costing $.79 to collect every dollar on the Mass Pike is an example. While toll may seem like a reasonable usage fee as case can be made that all our state highways and bridges benefit everyone even if they don't personally drive on them.

I'd suggest as an experiment adding all the other fees and taxes together, subtract the savings in collection costs, and see how much you'd have to increase the income tax to equal them.

bogofree said...

Fees are backdoor taxes and they hurt everyone. I just don't see the necessary reforms coming out of Beacon Hill nor do I expect any. The abuses have been gone over and over and changes are few and far between. As long as this state is populated with public agencies and quasi agencies that have excessive amouts of connected "employees" expect little change.

As business small or large would be nuts to stay in the state.

Hal Brown said...

You mean this Charles Lincoln:

Lincoln -- as the state inspector general calls him in his own scathing new report -- is ``a master manipulator." You almost have to admire the guy's genius in playing the system -- if we weren't picking up the bill.

That bill comes in the form of a lifetime pension of nearly $140,000 a year -- or $11,648.9 2 a month. That is an extraordinary payday for a retired a cop -- 55 percent higher than any pension ever paid in Plymouth County -- but the most stunning part is how Lincoln allegedly ``earned" that pension. The inspector general, Gregory Sullivan, calls it ``one of the most significant abuses in the expenditure of public funds and abuse of employment benefits in the history of the Commonwealth."

According to Sullivan, Lincoln fattened his pension by working two jobs at once -- as a Brockton police lieutenant and director of security at the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office -- for three years before he retired in 2004. Just a hard-working guy, you say? Try again. Lincoln is a hack's hack, the Barry Bonds of the Hack Hall of Fame. Two words: sick leave.

Good luck with that, Bozo! Strauss also voted in favor of screwing us over with more taxes. Like BB it's only a few bucks! These characters are clueless.

Bye Bye Patrick.

Men who have been mentioned as potential nominees include Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, Harvard Law professor Cass Sunstein and U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo of Chicago"

Just got a call from Canessa who explained how "difficult" it was for him to vote on tax increases without reform being done prior. Has filed several pieces of legislation that center on reform. Our differences are apparent - he is optimistic and I am pessimistic about this happening. At least he had the you know what to call. Bravo for him! Field the ticked off voter calls gets him points in my book.

Thanks, Rocky. I figured that Diane Feinstein should be on the list but she is too conservative. You don’t have to be a lawyer to be on the Supreme Court. Wonder if Adam could get on it?

I hope he chooses a woman with experience as a high court judge.

A case can be made to try to balance the Supreme Court to reflect the ethnic and religious makeup of American, but it never has come close to mirroring the male/female balance and it should.

That's because men are more different than women than men of one ethnic group are from men of another.

If he can find a black, Asian or Hispanic woman that would be a bonus.

I'm not so sure that is so once people reach higher education, professional levels. Knowledge is a great equalizer.

bogofree said...

Just my opinion but our society is making a huge mistake attempting this constant balancing of diversity. Now starting to get to the point where it is becoming absurd. Good ideas run amok.

Hal Brown said...

Since when was "society" trying to balance institutions with diversity?

Decision makers have been trying to achieve a balance but in my opinion the white male dominated society at large has been resisting this.

It's like Lorina Bobbit's is trying to get into their locker room with a meat cleaver or Denzel Washington wants to take their wives on a Hawaiian vacation.

I find it offense and downright silly that the current administration is looking under judical rocks to find someone that is "representative" for the SC. Why not just do away with all the stupidity since you have nine members and break it down according to census. Then a sitting president can choose within each segment someone that represents his/her political doctrine? Heck...we now have a position that is slotted for "Black" and we have slots slotted for "women" and, of course, the traditional ones for White males. Open up one of those for a Hispanic and another for an Asian and another for a Gay.

In the meantime I can just sit back and laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Hal. Have you investigated the hiring and promotion policies of most companies now? Diversity is such a big issue that the most qualified doesn't necessarily get the job. The new minority is becoming the white American male.

I believe that all forms of affirmative action were essential in the last three decades of the 20th century. Minorities and women needed an edge to become equally competitive in the marketplace. But this is 2009 and the days of special consideration should be over. The best person for the job. Period.

Hal Brown said...

Okay drive-by

I'll put investigating the hiring and promotion practices of companies on my to do list along with everything else I dare express an opinion on. I'll have to finish completing my masters in journalism and bachelors in fine arts photography degrees first.

I believe that population growth studies have shown that 100% Caucasians, male and female, will actually be in the minority a few decades from now. However I also think that the notion that white males have suffered to any great degree because of affirmative action is an anecdote fueled myth.

bogo,

looking under rocks, somebody hit you with the hyperbole stone this morning?

Here's something else I'd like to assign to my personal trash heap of mythology. It's that there is actually a best person in the entire world for any job.

l'd like to see a study done to see how many people actually believe this. I bet the results would show many do because they suffer from the Lake Wobegon Effect (link), you know, the town much like Middleboro where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average.

drive-by said...

Hal. Please don't take a difference of opinion personally. There are many things we do agree on. You just happened to strike a nerve because in my company I have seen many much more qualified men passed over because of the quota system for women managers. That practice takes away incentive and puts some people in charge who lack the natural apptitude of others.

Hal Brown said...

drive-by,

I don't take it personally and I don't disagree with you. I expect there are lots of examples where someone was promoted or hired to fill a quota over someone equally or more qualified.

I just think that in total if we could look at all examples we'd find that there was something of the Lake Wobegon Effect. How much I don't know.

The most glaring cases come when someone virtually everyone who knows him or her agrees they are unqualified bounces someone else out of a well deserved job.

When it comes to women getting jobs over supposedly more qualified men I'd want to know whether the bosses truly thought they had some needed skills like empathy, ability to listen, creativity and an analytic mind that the men not hired didn't have as much of.

I'd also want to know whether the bosses thought the women's past performance indicated a greater capacity for growth in the position.

All this being noted I am sure there are instances where totally inept women are promoted, just as there are when the bosses nephew or son-in-law is.

Empathy and diplomacy are not considerations in the cut throat high tech world where competing with other companies for contracts is the game. Management is done by spreadsheet all too often, not by leading. It's a numbers/quota game and is more apparent in companies who do work directly or indirectly for the government as opposed to companies who are competing in the commercial marketplace.

There's a consequence of putting people in lead positions significantly based on some quota mechanism. They tend to manage by numbers and official procedures. They tend not to lead because they haven't spent time in the trenches, don't have the appropriate technical background to be able to lead effectively. Leaders are needed to solve problems, not "managers".

The biggest problem with inclusion is exclusion.

How many have been denied adavancement in education, Business and government over race, gender and ethnic background?

Sometimes the solution is as bad as the problem.

"The biggest problem with inclusion is exclusion."

Did you actually make that one up?

Do you mean how many have been denied adavancement in education, business and government over race, gender and ethnic background because they were white males?

If so, good question... just how many are there?

Hal Brown said...

All good points to ponder - there are so many kinds of situations and skills sets needed to excel in vastly different jobs that it's impossible to generalize.

Filling positions with unqualified people based on a quota shouldn't be done. I believe Clarence Thomas is one of the most egregious examples of this.

I can only speak from my own experience and common sense. I'll have to put getting an MBA on my to do list to say I'm an expert.

I do see examples of people moving through the trenches and doing a greta job in management, and others who actually get an MBA without such experience.

Isn't the military based on a system where most officers are supposed to jump into positions in charge of small units as second lieutenants after being trained to be leaders?

The bumblebee queen, born in the spring come late fall having mated hibernates in shelters spaces, in tunnels in the ground, behind loose rock walls, or inside various structures. In the spring she starts a new colony - usually less than 50.

Bumblebees only live a year.

Yes....I made that up. I also stand by what I stated. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease or at least the equal.

I believe your opinion of Thomas is clouded by ideological issues. Mine is not. Personally, I think the lot of them should be sent out to pasture.

When a qualifier becomes more an issue of race, gender and ethnic background rather than ability the end result - IMO - will be a negative.

I don’t believe the path to personal guilt and subsequent redemption that inflicts a good portion of our population is via exclusionary practices.

Of course. I never meant to oversimplify. I never would endorse an unqualified person for a position because of any kind of quota.

I tried to make it clear that there are generally many equally qualified people for all positions and sometime someone with certain less than obvious abilities rooted in their background and life experience may bring something along with the needed job requirements that the standard issue white male doesn't.

This is more than filling a quota for the sake of filling a quota.

I am not a legal expert, law school will have to go on my to do list. But I do not think my views of Thomas are clouded by his conservatism. I just don't see him as much more than a mediocre justice.
