OPEN POSTS WEEK TWENTY-FIVE

The markets are really picking up and I am shocked. Never anticipated such a quick rise especially the S&P. Almost at beginning of 2009 levels and if you are willing to accept the markets as being the forecaster of economic recovery. Other signals are also being interpreted as being signals but it does seem bizarre when those signals indicate bad news but not as bad as it could be. Asian, Latin American and European funds have been doing exceptionally well. Bank stocks have been a gold mine. The sad reality is that measured unemployment is at 8.9% and real unemployment is probably around 16% - those collecting a check, those in transition, those who have dropped out of the labor market and those who work only part time. Long, long way to go on this mess.

Hal had an interesting post regarding documentation that the tribe may have been recognized prior to 1934. Isn’t that wonderful! I’m sure the ancestors that go back thousands of years would be delighted if the could be resurrected and given that astonishing news.

Limo apparently is focused on some non descript radio show that emanates for Brockton. I have listen only briefly months ago thanks to a link provided by BB. Maybe they have a studio audience and I can wander in and watch?

You win with pitching. I can find you several World Series winners that had lousy hitting and stellar pitching but cannot do it the other way around. The Sox bull pen continues to impress and Penny has back to back quality starts. Beckett appears to be a very good pitcher who had one great year. Dice-K is on the mend and should be ready to send Masterson back to the bull pen in a few weeks. Waiting in the wings is future Hall of Famer Smoltz and two kids who have been the best in the International League - Bowden and Buchholz.

So, you “unsophisticates” can post up the “wazoo” all you want. Feel free to copy over any posts you wish to continue with. Several have been rather informative.

Continued from Week 24:

ying-yang and wazoo are slang terms for anus. My only reason for pointing it out was that rude terms should NOT be used when referencing an elderly lady. I didn't expect such a hearty defense.

Even in my high dudgeon rants against those I called right wing hate mongers (on CHB in Feb. 2008) I tried to be more creative - and accurate - than that in describing the kinds of people we saw interviewed at Sarah Palin rallies.

About all Jessie, Mark and others seem to come up with is that.

1) I didn't come down hard on pro-casino posters' bad manners,

2) I used rude terms in a column (supposedly unbefitting one who is a psychotherapist) about the far right - like those zealots interviewed at Palin rallies - and

3) I implied they -local people- were racists (by writing about CERA and about racism).

I suggest following the debate on Bellicose Bumpkin here. You can post there with Google but he reviews comments before allowing them online.

I find reading what Mark posts on Bellicose Bumpkin interesting social psychology. I do actually have a BA in psychology and took both undergrad and grad courses in social psych., sociology and communications so I don't have to put this on my ever growing to-do list.

If you look up some of the websites about the do's and don'ts of debating you'll find lots of the don't among the tactics he uses. He's not nearly as bad as Jessie though, who rarely if ever responds to any challenges.

Mark does, although he manages to ignore points that I think are quite relevant, and does his share of evading and attempting to distract from my points by accusing me of something he considers worse or bringing up a barely relevant point as it if it is an exact parallel. He does this today on the points of mine he responds to.

For the record, I do make mistakes. While I don't "love" saying I'm sorry when I do, I try to own up to them.

I wish we were actually having a debate with an unbiased moderator who would hold us to the rules - even grade us - as if we were in a college debate.

I go with the Grey as I recall in the advertisments they used Bentley's. Very sophisticated.

With the trespass it is merely the invitation got lost in the mail.

Hal Brown said...

Bogo reminds me (in an email) of the salutary effects of being able to eat crow, i.e., admit when you're wrong and when appropriate saying you are sorry.

The most difficult part of achieving self-awareness is looking at aspects of yourself that you don't admire. Everyone has an ideal image of themselves, and at times when you look in the mirror with eyes wide open and the person who looks back isn't who you want it to be.

On the casino issue I've done several things that backfired. I felt it important to bring up the involvement of CERA locally. I wanted to discuss the few local people - not part of CFO - who seemed to be against the casino because they were prejudiced.

As a tactic this was an error because the CFO counter that I was race baiting worked for them. I do not believe I owe anybody an apology.

I also took photos of people who didn't want me to do so. This was indeed rude, although I believe their objections had to do with who was taking the picture not being photographed per se. I believed they were part of the story so I continued to take their pictures.

If they really had a phobia - as some do - about being photographed I apologize to them.

Mark attacks me today writing "Bull Hal. When Marshall was revealed as a lying rapist stealer of valor you wrote a gushy editorial that you felt his pain and it was time for him to begin to heal." That editorial is here.

Obviously I didn't know the extent of his crimes when I wrote it or that Amelia Bingham would be proven right in her allegations. I wish I had. Trying to show some empathy for someone isn't something to apologize for.

He also writes "You've set yourself up as the personal moat who tries to drench any critic with the stain of racist."

I can't find words strong enough to object to this untrue statement.

I swear that if I thought I had ever done this I would own up to it.

Since when do people lose their family for calling someone a goofball on the internet?

There are 4 people involved two carry guns! Yes I am scared of losing my family.

I took the statement the way "I" as in "ME" as in MQ read it and understood it.

I don't care what others say it says or what there understanding is of it is.

Its not their family IA is talking about. I have already talked to who I think is IA and I'll go with it if IA dose not appoligise for that statement.

How am I going to lose my family?

Has someone discussed doing this?

I'd say the most serious concern would be advertising when you aren't going to be home, not where you're going to be, so I hope everybody has a good alarm system and neighbors watching your house for anything unusual.

I am curious why some of the regular anonymous posters here don't trust people like bogo, "on my way" and I to keep their identity confidential.

I'm sure each of you have a reason they don't want to post under their real names or meet us in person (usual for a lunch on us).

Some day I'd like to know what the reasons are, if only to judge for myself whether they make sense, at least to me.

Maybe in your position I'd do the same.

Yes, if you wear a cowboy hat. See photo.

Should I spit my tobacco juice into a bottle or Styrofoam cup? Which is more environmentally friendly?

Anything is better than spitting it on the floor or into Jane Fonda's face (as someone did). The classy was is to use one of these. .

Is dogs playing poker considered fine art?

.

Not unless they are real dogs..

When I go squirrel hunting is it gentlemanly to load your significant others shotgun?

.

Not unless she's never done it before. It shows respect for her ability if she loads it herself. Besides she may need to load it some time when you aren't around. Plus it is safer for her (or him) to load their own..

Should my flannel shirt match the color of my pickup truck?

.

No. Same color flannel shirts are boring. Find some that include the truck color but also have a variety of other colors. This style consultant recommends avoiding to much red as it has become a cliche..

Nt that anyone here cares, but here's my final act on the Bellicose stage:

I was going to put this on Bellicose, but then read the last 5-6 comments and changed it:

If you want me to debate you here be aware that since you aren't my clients my patience is not unlimited.

I suggest the following:

Be specific when you criticize me. Use actual quotes and links.

You can easily search the Casino-Friend website using key words from the first page.

If I used hate speech you would be justified in blaming me for what others did with those statement. Show me examples of hate speech I used before saying I incited anything.

Don't make connections between things that aren't clearly connected.

Don't use barely related examples of my supposed misdeeds to distract from my points. If I did something wrong it doesn't negate something you did wrong even if the wrongs are equal.

Don't bring up subjects I've already addressed and answered as best as I could.

Learn what an ad hominem attack is and don't use them against me.

Don't hold me accountable for not knowing things I didn't know unless the information was readily available to the public.

Leave the fact of my being a psychotherapist out of attacks against me. I'm as entitled to an opinion as anybody is.

Hold yourself to the same standard of courtesy when you post about me as I do when I post about you.

It is easy and perhaps gratifying to get cheers from your own choir by making sarcastic remarks about me, but as tempting as it is to do so, I won't be here for you to kick around if it persists.

CHANGED TO;

I see there's no room on this blog for a respectful, courteous dialogue with someone all of the posters disagree with and most of the posters persist in making ad hominem attacks against.

I have treated all of you with respect in my responses to you. My good manners have not been reciprocated.

Lots more opinion about me from Jessie on Belicose Bumpkin here; but the only thing I wanted to state (for the second time) is that I didn't take pictures with a camera at my side.

I hope this is merely a misperception on her part. The picture of Judy Gibbs and Jessie (click on thumbnail on upper right) was CROPPED out of a picture of several people standing on the island by the high school and taken the NORMAL way.

I will continue to take pictures of people and places, where and when legally permissible, and decide for myself when to honor requests not to do so.

By the way, two of my pictures, not credited, were in the Gazette on Thursday (the Greener Horizon crew and the woman jogging by the new garden).

What is wrong with some people, Let me explain!

Body Odor...

They..stink..Pure unshowered nastiness..

Common sense should dictate showering and putting some clean clothes on daily, Your going to be around other people that might find the stench of unbathed bodies very embarassing.

A real friend would be able to tell you to your face if you reak! Like in the service or on a sports team, Dude your hawking take a shower.

This would be a good thing, That means you would have a real friend that thought he was close enough he could tell you that without reprucussion.

Same as when you have a dancing bear hanging off your nose, A good friend can tell you, Someone not so close will just wipe there own nose hoping you will pick up on it and knock your bear off without having to tell you.

Here is my question..What happens when everyone knows you stink,They all put up with the smell, thinking it might just be a one time deal.

If you put up with the smell and never told people they have a bad case of the Whooop! Deee! Dooos, does that mean you feel you were never close enough to this person, in all actuality you were just aquaintances passing through life?

Think about letting people know if they smell, might tell you a little bit about your relationship and how close you really are.

Now before you all put your arms up and ask yourselves, is he talking about me?

No I'm not!!! Don't feel it..

Hal, why can't people tell other people they smell funky? Or they have a boogie?

Hal Brown said...

Consider why it seems easier for people to tell a man his fly is open than he has body odor, or why it's easier to tell someone their breath smells like garlic and offer them a mint than they have consistently bad breath.

I think it's because in each example above the former has a quick and easy fix, and doesn't point attention to a personality trait. The same goes for the visible dried nasal mucous (see illustration).

In our culture we generally don't tell people face-to-face about their consistently socially off-putting behavior. Of course when you dislike the person now the Internet offers open season on such criticism, though it's often peppered with insults.

(If someone wants to bother, they can list the names I've been called.)

A close friend or loved one should be able to overcome concerns about the person's embarrassment or anger and tell them if their habits or behavior is offensive to others.

There are a lot of interrelated reasons they DON'T do this but probably the most common are fears of alienating or angering the person and knowing from experience they won't do anything about it.

Rocky said...

You mean they don't shower or they don't use deodorant because many people believe the deoderants cause serious health problems later in life.

Stinking from being unclean is different. Clean body and clothes do not stink even if you do not use deodorant and when you sweat, you have a different scent not stink.

Then add on your diet. If you eat good foods and do not eat candy, drink sugary soda or alcohol or smoke, you probably will not stink.

I prefer the deodorant, no smoking and clean clothes.

On the Way said...

Don't worry if my signifigant other was to get the Whoop Deee Dooos, I have no problem telling her to get in that shower..

She is my friend.

Never had to tell her that though.

LMCAO....

Hal Brown said...

Sweat has very little odor. Your dog can differentiate your sweat from someone else but most people can't. What causes an unpleasant odor is when the sweat interacts with bacteria on the skin.

Simple bathing combats most body odor.

Deodorants that only inhibit sweating and add a perfume don't do anything to stop the underlying problem which is bacteria on the skin.

There are the obvious causes of sweating - exercise and heat - but anxiety is another cause in lots of people.

Sometimes the sweating is the only sign the person themselves has that they are anxious. They may FEEL calm but the underlying anxiety isn't conscious. The body knows but the mind resists recognizing it.

On the Way said...

What if your just a slob? Is that just laziness?

Hal Brown said...

You're getting into pretty heavy psychology here.

I don't think there's such a thing as "just being a slob" if, as I assume by slob you mean that the majority of people would consider the behavior deviant.

Lack of personal hygiene, living with dirty dishes and uneaten food, having your home cluttered and other examples, and considering if there are negative effects on personal relationships, all have to be evaluated as one of many other characteristics if you're looking to determine whether the person is just "quirky" or has a psychiatric diagnosis.

I hope this and my other answers to mental health questions are informative and not used to condemn anyone. The more we understand people's psychological problems the more tolerant we should be of their off-putting behavior.

Check this out from the Bridgewater BOS:

"Residents will no longer be able to speak on the spur of the moment during the open forum section of the Board of Selectmen’s weekly meetings.

The board’s new chairman Tuesday night announced a new policy — residents will have to sign up in advance with their name and topic.

Stanley Kravitz (click thumbnail to enlarge - he's contracting to farm the bogs we sold), who was re-elected to the board last month and was elected as chairman last week, held his first regular weekly meeting on Tuesday and his first order of business was to announce weekly selectmen “staff meetings” to be held at 6 p.m. before each selectmen’s meeting.

Then he announced that any resident who wants to speak at open forum during a selectmen’s meeting needs to register beforehand."

Very interesting article. I would love to read the book “Start with Why”, by Simon Sinek. I think he has taken a great topic to deal with. Teaching leaders to inspire others is a good idea to bring up a civilized society. Thanks for sharing. Keep posting.
