OPEN POSTS WEEK TEN

Quite an interesting week as I attempt to recover from this cold that is just a ...well, you get the idea. Real nasty and the meds just knock me out.

First off is the coronation of President WOW (Walk On Water). At least WOW had the good sense to put a damper on the fact that a miracle will not happen in the next week or two over issue number one - the economy. Good move as he attempts to toss money at the problem just like the former whatever his name was attempted to do. Use to be only the Democrats tried to solve every issue with wads or dough but the Republicans have certainly adopted that tactic. WOW also mentioned bipartisanship and IMO patient zero on that issue has been our very own very senior senator and Bork. I have been a real pessimist on the economy for over a year and see this getting worse and worse. Hope I am dead wrong.

This week the local BOS has been in the news and that certainly has been trashed around on this blog. Speaking of trashed around - BBB (Bellicose Bumpkin Bashing) has taken on a life of its own among those who post here. Just don’t exceed my very liberal limits on that and BB is always welcome to respond. Back to the BOS issue over the IGA and that has been blogged to death. The comments certainly make for enjoyable reading and I’d suggest everyone check out the various local blogs for comments and commentary.

Steve McKinnon has announced his run for Steve Spataro’s seat. Your comments or any by Steve (either) is certainly welcome. Just try to keep it issue oriented and not personal so that usually puts a damper on my comments.

The CPA is either in limbo or dead and I’m leaning towards dead. Maybe next time around especially if I’m wrong on that economy thing. Never did see a reply to LA’s figures on open space that were correct.

The state has proposed a cut in local aid to the tune of 128 Million. I assume all will not suffer equally and if things usually go the way they do for our hamlet we will suffer more than most. I suspect more to come as the state will do this piece meal. On top of that is the idea of one rep is to raise the gas tax by twenty-nine cents per gallon. This will in addition to toll increases and as The Herald noted the state managed to add 2,100 jobs when reduction was suppose to take place. Needless to say there is no joy in 351 Mudville’s over any of it. Ah…the joys of a one party state!

Post away. Add any topics you wish to add. All are welcome.

Funny how as we grow older we start to look back more. Recently I joined classmates.com to see what happened to the kids who graduated in my class. Within a few days I recieved a notice of the passing of someone I remember as the lanky, awkward nerd the bullies always targetted. Along with the obit, the poster included a list of his accomplishments. Guess sometimes the least become the first:

"Albert Meyerhoff has practiced for more than 30 years in labor, civil rights and environmental law. After graduating from Cornell Law School in 1972, he joined California Rural Legal Assistance representing farm workers and the rural poor. In 1981, Mr. Meyerhoff joined the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a national environmental organization, as Director of their Public Health Program. During his 17 years with NRDC, Mr. Meyerhoff testified more than 50 times before the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Mr. Meyerhoff has authored numerous articles for scholarly and general publications, including the Stanford Law Review, EPA Journal, Environmental Law Quarterly, The New York Times, The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times. Meyerhoff was interviewed numerous times by Bill Moyers for his expertise. Since joining Coughlin, Stoia, Geller, Rudman and Robbins LLP , a class action firm, in 1998, Mr. Meyerhoff has been lead counsel in several labor and environmental cases, including UNITE v. The Gap, contesting the sale of garments manufactured under sweatshop conditions in the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, and Public Citizen v. US DOT, challenging cross border trucking from Mexico in violation of U.S. environmental laws. Until recently when his term expired, Mr. Meyerhoff served on the Sierra Club Board of Trustees. In 2006, he was selected as Trial Lawyer of the Year by Trial Lawyers for Public Justice and received lifetime achievement awards from both the ACLU and the League of Conservation Voters."

Guess that sometimes being constantly targetted leads one to fight back in some amazing ways. RIP Al. Who would have ever imagined?

If people are out of the loop on this on this post look at the first post last week and a few follow.

Wait until the state takes a look at the pensions. Cut...cut...cut or start applying state tax to state pensions.

Albert Meyerhoff accomplished a lot and obviously left behind a successful legacy. All too often success is measure by a bank book balance or a string of initials after your name. Some of the most successful people I have know have neither. Some have both.

The truth squad is still attempting to hunt down Clark, CT before they move on to the CPA issue. Last I heard the squad was at the quarter slots at Foxwoods with a group of ESL teachers.

A couple of posters here and many more on other websites seem ready to blow their corks however. An ice bath followed by a comforting ECT might help cool them off a bit. All the events of the past week or so will sort themselves out. Fun to read and write opinions as long as we remember that the net is not real life. It's hard to know who or what to believe at this point so I'm mostly watching the unfolding drama from the peanut gallery.

I have been researching every bit of data for days. Some real intersting theories came out though.

I came up with a Beaut..

Blogger A we all know is connected to blogger b,c,d,and e. Then blogger F comes out the wood work and connects to Blogger B who is connected to Blogger A now blogger A is connected to blogger F.

So by useing the 6 degrees of seperation and all that has gone on has blogger A been connected to Blogger F the whole time? Was it the performance of a life time ?

Only time will tell. To fully understand this you have to connect commenters ,G,H,I,J,K,L,M,N,O,P,Q,R and the multiple S T and Ys who I assume are all the same.

Which leaves the real puzzle Who is X and Y.

Now by reading this you must of figured out who Z is! LOL

Getting into sub bloggers 1 2 3 4 will be for another time.

Question for this week.

The following has NOTHING to do with with any candidate currently (or considering) running for selectman. It is a meant to be entirely generic.

Why would anyone want to run for selectman in today's blog bashing environment? Is it fair for someone to be concerned that anything they say may be intentionall or unintentionally perverted on blogs. A recent example is what JP said about Lincoln Andrews on his facts regarding open space. This was a minor issue, but she chose to through stuff against the wall and see what sticks. I will not get into the stuff that has been said about current selectman and their private lives.

It appears that someone must have either skin as thick as an alligator, or be in the good graces of the Middleboro Blogfathers to ignore the the stuff said.

A person with children in the school system runs the risk of having their kids or personal work life dragged into the arena.

So what are your thoughts on the qualities a person must have to survive the wrath of the Blogfathers? I have several thoughts and will save them for later.

Make sure you have all information ahead of time, A weeks worth of preparation time.

All to make other members look really bad.

It makes me wonder if it was another type business and they were going to add the 18th if people would be clipping videos just hurt others.

Enough is enough.

Then again this is my opinion only.

bogofree said...

I would love to be on the BOS! Think of all the bloggers I would create with my list of inane and stupid comments? Wait...that has already been done.

In this age of personal politics one goes into such a position with trepidation as the key word. Does the reward outweigh the risk? The risk is that you have that very large target painted on you for virtually any decision you are involved in. IMO what makes one such an easy target is access. A BOS member lives here and is seen around town by the political junkies. Nothing like taking out your frustration on national and state politics on some poor sap just trying to contribute by tossing away hours that could be equal to a job.

There are politicians I have voted for that I disagree with on a majority of the issues but I have to recognize their work ethic, accessibility, knowledge of the issue and consistency and that may outweigh voting for someone more aligned with my political views but sloppy in his/her approach.

Guess what? The town will continue. It was here before him and will be after him. There is no such thing as the indispensable person. There are 4 people on the board and business will continue. Hopefully there will be less drama.

Middleboro will survive and prosper, despite what some would like to hope or believe.

This sets the stage for my earlier question about qualifications to be selectman. IMO the best qualities (which cannot always be achieved or are always necessary) are:

Living in the town long enough to understand the collective psyche of the townspeople

Coming up through other boards to gain a finer understanding of how town government operates.

Gaining respect (does not mean friendship) of the town bureaucracy. It is the employees that make the town run day to day.

Having knowledge about what state laws usurp town laws.

Having the time required to devote the position (it can easily consume 20 hours per week at times)

Remembering you are one person of 5 on a board

Never forgetting who the customer is (townspeople)

Willing to seek counsel from others that have been involved for years. What you do with the counsel is your choice, digesting the advice is what matters.

There are many more personal attributes, but they vary from person to person based on their individual nature.

Having thick skin and not caring what people blog about you is required in today's environment unfortunately.

bogofree said...

Didn't catch the resignation speech but I'm sure it will be posted. Always have the reruns.

I have no idea if this is a positive or a negative at this point. My assumption was the BOS would work out their issues.

Would assume any chance at reviewing IGA is kaput.

That sand and gravel crew have had more TV face time than Meet The Press. How many times have they been before the BOS?

Maybe Adam can apply for TM? Nope...already filled.

I feel sorry for MT as half her material went out the door.

Agree or disagree and no matter what any motives may have been Adam Bond did offer his time in service to the community just like others have from various boards to civic organizations to sports.

Suo Mynona said...

To be a selectman now a person needs to have psychological armor as thick as nuclear missile silo. Not having internet or would also be also plus.

A "good old boy" (there are about 10) should run for the remaining time left on Adam's term. It would add some needed short term stability. Small chance of that happening. Why would anyone want to subject themselves to BB, MT and their posters. BB is allowing selectmen to called dumb as rocks and having IQs less than an amoeba. Quality stuff. Does this help the situation? IMO it just lessens the field of potential talent from either "fresh meat" or old dinosaur carrion.

bogofree said...

Time to wheel out a dinosaur and I can think of several as I sure most can.

I am somewhat mystified about the very public resignation. Was the drama really necessary? Would not a resignation prior to a full board meeting have sufficed? Maybe calling a meeting before hand with other BOS members so they would not be flummoxed by this broadside? Again, was the drama really necessary? Before TV, fellow BOS members, a few media members and interested citizens. Going out with an escort? Was a police presence necessary? If you fear for yourself at a public meeting why put your spouse in harms way?

I don't like the deal and never have. I and others saw the internal issues of the tribe as a possible way to negotiate for a better deal and that appears lost. Bond represented that possibility. It was worth examining the IGA. A gamble for sure, but this is a casino, so gamble.

I tutored students for an MCAS math retest that they took in the fall. For students to be eligible for tutoring had to fail the test one or more times and several had failed in four times. Talk about having a defeatist attitude. The students have a mountain of personal baggage and to quote John Foggarty - “none are fortunate sons.” Four of the six passed and the two others just missed and have vowed to pass it. They did not succeed because of any skill I had but a simple desire to stick with a task at hand and not resign when faced with what they at one time had perceived as insurmountable odds.

I have looked several times a day at the various blogs and have to admit there is a certain sensibility present on this one.

Opinion have been expressed regarding the dearly departed Mr. Bond without the over the top comments that seem to prevail with others.

There appears a lot of drama surrounding this resignation when the reality is it is just one member of a board of five. Granted he is a member that seems to thrive on face time but that is probably - since I don’t know the man - just part of his personality. Just theatrics. I find the undertones of what else is hiding amusing and apparently a pastime for some.

If the intellectual capabilities of the BOS was as lacking as some have suggested why have they managed to stay in office despite concerted efforts to remove them? Maybe it is that new local phenomena that has classified Middleboro as a haven for third rate dips**ts?

bogofree said...

LA, SM or NR need to come out of retirement and give it a shot. BB could also make a run for it now that he's involved in politics - just don't have AB as his campaign manager. Test the waters, BB, as a new comer to the larger stage it is worth it just for the experience. SM will be a very viable option for the SS seat. Maybe some others will take out papers?

Quite a substantial list of former BOS members who are well respected, have an extensive local resume and have shown grace under fire and that just brings me back to the first three I mentioned.

What's up with this rumor mill about who is running and who is not? Has ANYONE picked up a phone to actually ask? Or do they prefer to speculate? Confirming if some one is running for an office is super easy. Here is how to determine if a rumor about someone is true

Step 1: Find your phone book
Step 2: Look up the persons last name then the first
Step three: Look at the 8 numbers that follow the name
Step four: Pick up your phone.
Step five: This is a tricky part. Press "1" before the eight numbers to ensure you make a connection
Step six: say "hello" (not hi kiddo is this where your the "third rate dipSh*t" parent lives)
Step seven: Identify yourself and ask to speak with the person.
Step eight: Ask them the question.
Step nine: say thank you for clarifying the rumor
Step ten: Post the factual first hand information you received.

Note: You cannot confirm if someone is running for elective office in Clark Ct because everyone has an unpublished number

bogofree said...

Boy is that stuff great! On the LA, SM and NR that should be the SM that has a Dr. before his name and not the potential newbie.

Seems that the two plain clothes Middleboro Police Officers, who a reporter recognized, shadowing Mr. Bond at the last BOS meeting were not the ONLY Police presence at the meeting. It looks like the Police may have a multi-jurisdictional investigation underway regarding sick stalkers who have threatened Mr. Bond. Gee, I wonder how many other Police Departments are involved? I bet Mary Tufts is sh*tting in her pants wondering just who they might be investigating! LOL!

That's it, Mary - post crap about a COP on your site, you jack*ss! Ya, Mary is real big and tough right now - she doesn't want the big bad police officer and/or his friends posting on her blog! She won't allow it! If the Police didn't fully realize what a sick, crazy f*ck you were before, Mary - they sure get the full picture now! Good job! LOL!

I hope orange is your color, Mary!

I found the thread on the MT blog so typical of the paranoia that seems to consume too many people. The person actually used that rarest of rare - a real name! I'm sure if the post was positive - meaning agreeing with fellow posters on that site - it would have gone unnoticed. Turns out this happens to be a McCop who was with McBond and might be involved in a McInvestigation.

TZ has reminded us of some old news and that is OK. I see nothing wrong with it so it will stay. McDecision? If any wish to be critical of Avenger or TZ they are always welcome to respond. Just do some self editing.

TZ...problem is many boards that have been mentioned have a history of posting OPINIONS and then having them transform into facts.

TZ...comments are OK and I would suggest you continue with your own self edit. Just remember the above...opinion versus fact. So far you have posted facts. True...from the past but facts with opinions attached.

Hope that made sense and not nonsense.

Internet Avenger:

As I see it, the Gladys Kravitz blog is a pitiful, hate filled site where people are feeding each other with their verbal bile. MB was right when he posted that their behavior in continuing to flog Mr. Bond after his resignation was "embarassing......and that people need to let it the #@*! go."

What is equally perplexing to me is that some on the pro side, one individual using his long running website/forum to now vilify Bond after singing his praises since '07, turned on him so rabidly. That mystifies me.

I believe that Middleboro residents, regardless of their opinion of Bond's politics, need to show some appreciation for his many years of service to the Town.
Few are willing to give that much of themselves.

I also wish to add that I feel MB and Bond made a genuine attempt to to try to open up the lines of communication on both sides of the casino issue. Unfortunately, sometimes when you try to build a bridge, some rush in from both ends to attack you in the middle.

Obviously the Bonds must have felt threatened by someone to need police protection. No one should have to live in fear. No one.

I am always wary of zealots fighting for a cause. They tend to become so obsessed with their agenda that they adopt a "take no prisoners" attitude. That causes real problems, especially in a small town environment.

As to Ms. Tufts, I found it hilarious that she got caught with her pants down regarding the identity of Mr. McAdam. However, even in her concession that he was indeed a real person, she was snarky about it. Typical. Even MB and RY now seem to find her rantings over the top. Hope they finally cut her loose.

Personally, I wish the Bonds well and hope they now find some peace. Since Mr. Bond is no longer a public figure, he is also no longer fair game for bloggers.

When I write opinion I write it as such, clearly labeled. Note that the piece you refer to is an article. It is not opinion. It presents facts. It describes what happened and quotes some of what was published elsewhere.

Nothing published in that article was untrue.

If I get a fact wrong I correct it.

This is a quote from the MR blog and what I am specifically addressing is the quote about "undefined." and that information has already been listed on this blog by myself and other posters. LA had the correct figures. In fact he probably under estimated. Details for each area has been posted.

As far as Marsha B. not being familiar with the size of the town? Well, give her a C for Geography since she was close. I would suggest several of you ask folks you know who live in town the size of the town. I'd be shocked if 50% even got close. In fact I just asked the lovely Cynthia and her answer was "I don't know."

"In his theatrical presentation, Lincoln Andrews stated that Middleboro had 7 Square Miles of Open Space. When I asked for specifics, the response was a hostile non-answer.

Mrs. Duphily rushed to his defense, armed with no facts and Mrs. Brunelle indicated that Middleboro contains 56 Square Miles.
.

The numbers and facts remain undefined, but the following offer some conversions:"

Rocky, you better get your facts straight and stop spewing garbage about people. People need to stop listening to Mary Tufts! As we all know little Miss Mary has spent nearly two years maligning Adam Bond propagating the ridiculous notion that Adam was some sort of plant - or secret agent - for casino backers. Unfortunately, it seems as if Mary and her demeneted pal, JP, neglected to do their HOMEWORK - as usual. Mr. Bond was the ONLY Selectman who OBJECTED to the sale of the land to the tribe! That's right! It's all there - right in the public record! All Bond did was try and get the Town the best deal possible after his FELLOW Selectman out voted him and sold Middleboro down the river.

Pretty scary when you look at the ACTUAL facts - not the deluded fantasies of an obsessed housewife.

mildly said...

I believe that Bond offered the best chance we had for revisiting the IGA and getting a better deal. But instead of supporting his effort, we blew it by throwing rocks at him. Mark my words, if we're stuck with the deal we have now that 7-11 Million will be worthless due to the raging inflation that always follows a recession.

Also, would you prefer to be ostriches and bury our heads in the sand about MD's and HB's obvious close ties to the tribe? I want to know when someone's stabbing me in the back and I thank Bond for letting the cat out of the bag.

Make no mistake about it, listening to MT on the subject of Adam Bond is a BIG mistake. I'd hardly call her objective.

Chairman Perkins said he was in favor of forming an exploratory committee in response to a news release by the Wampanoag of Mashpee who are looking for about 200 acres in Southeastern Massachusetts for a casino. He said he had been approached by a number of residents.

Selectman Bond agreed. He asked if the economic impact of having a casino was known.

Mr. Healey said he didn’t know, but noted it would significantly change the character of the town.

Selectwoman Brunelle said the economic impact would be whatever was negotiated with the group.

Chairman Perkins noted that towns in Connecticut that have casinos don’t pay taxes.

Upon motion by Selectman Bond and seconded by Selectwoman Brunelle, the Board
VOTED: To invite the Town Planner and B&I Commission to meet with the Board next week to discuss concepts about possible locations, and to have the Town Manager contact someone in the Wampanoag tribe to see if there would be an interest in coming to Middleboro.

Unanimous Vote.

I certainly supported him doing just that - revisit. I'd love to see them make it a party of five rather than having AB dine alone but the others chose to bring their lunch and eat it in the lunch room at OZ. Sure...the deep six of the IGA could leave the door open for zero riches but I just suspect that would be a long shot.

Now as far as quitting and his methods. Already posted on that. Didn't like the method or the drama with his exit strategy and his way of having a public temper tantrum over the four blind mice. There goes the opportunity to have someone with a voice for getting better bucks. Some may not like him as the taskmaster, including me, for this but he was all we had. But, then again, that could certainly raise a question of trust.

If your going to leave out the important piece of the puzzle to the general public as to why your in this debate. If you were truthful from the start and say I and my family stand to lose or gain if this comes amongst other reasons.

I agree.

Some actively pro people were up front about this, some with hopes that, for one example, limo runs would benefit. Of course the construction unions hoped for jobs and were quite involved as pros.

Oddly it was suggested that a certain unfeeling therapist had a job lined up as a gambling clinic director even though he made it clear he wasn't a gambling addiction specialist. I have it on the best authority possible that he wouldn't take such a job if it was offered and is quite content with his small private practice.

Now as far as the beef I am beginning to suspect that Mr. Bond is now a political Vegan so don’t expect much for when you toss away all the theatrics and face tearing the issue is simple - Occam’s Razor? To me it is. A simple issue.

Adam Bond wants the IGA reviewed and the others balked. That is the very point that should have been discussed in the open by the board with input from interested parties. Now sundry issues have been brought in with “alleged” this and “alleged” that so that explanations must follow and the gossip and innuendo gets amped up.

I agree with his intent but not his methods.
