Illegals! Terrorists! BS! Taxes! And More!

Was watching The Early Show on CBS on Saturday AM and they were doing a special on living past 100. As I listened to the show it seemed they created a laundry list of a secrets for a longer life that would be virtually impossible for any of us to follow with some of them even being contradictory.

Terrorist are to be tried at the scene of their crime and the talking heads are tossing the sanity of doing this around. Not to me as what strikes a cord is the years this trial will take. WTC has happened to our legal system that has turned the most simplistic of cases in a legal Bataan Death March? And this one will be far from simple. The conspirators will die of old age before this runs its course.

Middleboro may be three million in the fiscal hole and we have all heard that story before. Seems the Chicken Little approach is standard operating procedure over the years until some fiscal magic or hidden funds appear to lighten the burden. Always thought there was a certain degree of theatrics on the part of the previous TM on the issue. However, I suspect that Chicken Little has been plucked and served by The Colonel and that the town may be faced with a stark fiscal outlook.

Blogger Shark. When are you going to invite me into your private room? LMBAO!

Administration peeps have stopped using trickle down and have started using filtered down to describe stimulus impact. Can’t have that Reagan connection.

IMO Balloon Dad appears to lack some basic parenting skills and also lacks - totally - any common sense.

Prisoners get Swine Flu shots before health care workers and pregnant civilians. Illegals attempt to get a drivers license and in state tuition. Illegals may get dental coverage under Mass Health. Thank you to all the moonbats.

Does not impact me directly but it appears this current administration has not seen a tax it does not like for the “rich.”

Saw a display by the Society of Mayflower Descendents at the Heritage Day and I found it like bragging you had a relative that was a guard at Dachau or your distant relatives owned a 300 slave plantation in Mississippi. Native Americans have an entirely different perspective.

A Stoughton police sergeant convicted of extortion is attempting to grab 113K in back pay including pay for hours he spent in court defending himself. I can now understand why Sgt. David Cohen and extortion seem to be interchangeable.

We can look forward to his "World Tour" at least. If no one knows who I am, I will be "in the front row" with my friend Mr. Baseball -- Bob Uker (AKA Bogo) He has connections in high places.

Suo what is your take on this new town manager?

Suo Mynona said...

He is excellent -- I firmly believe that. The TM job is very difficult, as it is impossible to please everyone. There will always be something for naysayers -- it is the nature of the position. Charlie is a poised man that rises above things and is very cerebral in making decisions. He is very good at delegating and not micro managing. Most importly he is very strong in municipal finance.

He has quickly adjusted to Middleboro's positive culture -- I am serious.

He has the breadth of knowledge required to run a town and is willing to put in the requisite time. We are very fortunate to have Mr. Cristello.

Yes I am a major fan.

I am quite disappointed with the AMC series The Prisoner. Loved the one from 1967 but this one is plain dull.

I applaud the decision that the new DPW manager made regarding unaccepted streets. This is an issue on which a decision has to me made that is consistent for all but not the rush job that went out. Work it out in the spring.

Family Guy said...

Seems counter does not work. It's the thought that counts.

IMO the new TM is in a difficult position with a big budget crunch, a BOS that seems to be in shambles, changes in department heads and now the prospect of an override. Thankless position that just seems to Clark off too many people.

bogofree said...

That counter is strange as anyone can set it and it will continue to appear for what time they have it set for. For each it will be different. Anyways it will soon be gone.

BS (how appropriate) has opened up his site again.

jane lopes said...

People are rushing to the defense of the new DPW director on the "no plw" issue without knowing all the facts - and if there IS anyone who knows all the facts on this, God bless them. This is what I posted in the Nemasket forum:
This issue is nowhere near as straightforward as it might sound - and the DPW director is beginning to figure it out, since he noted Monday night that the list of "private roads" is "dynamic" - meaning the current lists aren't even accurate. Woloski Park, for instance, is listed as a street that's sanded and plowed regularly, but it is not.
The DPW director and town counsel (who ought to know better) make it sound like "private roads" and "unaccepted streets" are interchangeable terms. They are not, and when pressed town counsel admitted that. Some unaccepted roads are nevertheless public roads - River's Edge Drive, which is on the list not to be plowed, is a perfect example, obviously a public road. Dan Murray admitted it a case could be made for some of the streets on the "no plow" list being public ways.
What they didn't talk about are all the roads that are routinely plowed and maintained by the town, even though they have never been accepted by the town, because they are obviously public roads, some of the main roads in town or at least sections of them. They are in county or state layouts.
The point is this is a real can of worms that there was no compelling reason to open, especially right before winter sets in.

jane lopes said...

"No plow," that is - sorry.

anonymous said...

I realize the inconsistency on this issue as some streets have been plowed forever and others are not. I also cannot imagine why this issue was brought up as late fall has set in. This should be examined and a policy established but when spring is here.

I am concerned that the town will be obligated to maintain the streets or bring them up to standards and that will cost. I believe that issue was presented by Brian G.

Now some of the roads seem to be in excellent condition and others are nothing but a collection of pot holes.

anonymous said...

Jane it is nice to see you posting here as I know you have in the past. I don't belong to the exclusive club of which you speak. LMCAO!

bogofree said...

There are roads in Mboro that obviously have been used as carpet bombing practice by B-52's.

After a street has been plowed for decades I would expect the process to continue and not a sudden surprise pulled. Seems like there were folks at the meeting the other night have been paying their taxes and receiving limited services and now are expected to dig deep at the last moment to get the problem resolved. I liked Steve’s approach of plowing after four inches of snow.

I can also understand the problem now faced with providing services that some may not be entitled to receive especially with a limited budget. I would also expect a suit to follow and I understand a former member of the BOS is possibly contemplating that route with other taxpayers. Hope there are no dogs on the mentioned streets as there goes the client base. This could be as dividing an issue as the casino.

Suo Mynona said...

Many different issues apply to different roads. River's Edge is an easy one IMO. In addition to having recveived public services for many years, it is the fault of the town/Planning Board that road is not complete. Too much surety was released and the town was unable to finish the project with the remaining funds. It is a policy that has since been changed. That said, there is never a guarantee that a true subdivision will assured town acceptance (though they always are)

Many of the other roads are very complicated, but have been plowed and received trash pick up at the house. As a Member of the Board of Health (i.e. a selectman) I would not want all residents to have to deposit their trash at the end of the road. It would quickly become a feeding spot for coyotes and unsanitary.

If residents have been receiving town plowing and trash pick up they every reason to expect it will continue.

Over the years town counsel has rendered many different opinions on this issue. Katrina drive is a prime example. Additional "Form A" lots (house lots) were allowed to built because the developer proved it was maintained by the town.

I also question how much it actually costs to plow these roads. All of the snow plows are already mobilized and driving by the roads.

Sometimes legal opinions and what is correct for a community can be at odds. That is why there are often home rule petitions -- one will hopefully be coming in the future regarding IMAs as I have previously commented.

jane lopes said...

I would also question whether, on further reflection, town counsel would have an opinion closer to those he has offered in the past. Seems to me that our esteemed walk-off selectman would have a tougher time pressing a lawsuit on behalf of those who have been "injured" by policies allowing "private roads" to be plowed than would residents of, say Gibbs Road who could argue that since the town has plowed, sanded and minimally maintained the road for years and that it is the main access to a semi-public camp it has by prescription become a public way.
I had forgotten the details about River's Edge - and the residents are taking steps to get their road accepted anyway - but I'm sure there are others still in limbo. If one of the solutions is to accept the law Dan Murray talked about, we should do that.
I agree the cost of plowing these roads is probably minimal in the scheme of things.

chica said...

You get the services for years you expect it and no policy seems to exist except one that is exclusionary in that some get it and some don't. It impacts me so it is personal. I can't imagine this being rejected at Town Meeting .

In the meantime the recent mammogram issue is to me a precursor of what one may expect with national health care. I can see the value in requiring all to be insured and I can certainly understand the need for portability but I can also see how fraud is rampant in government programs as they now exist.

bogofree said...

I cannot imagine the degree of fraud that will take place with a government run program. You need a small army of auditors now and auditors to audit the auditors. A Madoff is even low end compared to what now exists. What concerns me is my own self interest and I think that when the government opens the door on this I'll end up with less coverage.

Open the door is a truism to me when discussing government programs. Just a simple program can end up being expanded exponentially which is why I am surprised by the reticence of some moonbats in passing legislation as it now stands. They will eventually get their way and a lot more as the program is expanded.

***BB & Flat Iron Review***

Bogo, I, and three wonderful women (who dared to be seen with us) all went to the Flat Iron for an evening of food, music and companionship.

We arrived at 7:30 PM to find a "reserved" sign placed atop our table – we received special treatment. The restaurant was in typical pristine and clean condition. Service was prompt, with a fine selection of specials. We all ate off of the menu.

Two orders of steak tips, vegetable stir fry, baked haddock, and liver and onions (hard to find for those with such a proclivity.)

While waiting for our meal we enjoyed the comfortable and fun atmosphere comprised of many locals. As we chatted we listened to a half hour of BB singing a song called “Check 1, 2, 3 check, check” I had not heard the extended version of the song before, but it was a nice prelude.

During the waiting time Bogo brought out the “Clark The Toothless Shark” book. It was fun to actually see our investment in future of the Middleboro library -- though we may donate it to the historical commission. My wife looked at the book, and was naturally suspicious. The lovely Cynthia asked if there was some peculiar significance to the book. I told her to ask our companion Jane about the book. Jane explained and my wife (who has a social filter and far more class than I) shot me dinner dinners darts. Bogo and I were good little eighth graders and put the book away.

Our dinner came just before BB started playing. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. My haddock was cook to perfection and a very clean taste. The baked potato had a crispy skin, much better than the usual soft skinned baked potatoes served at some eateries.

BB started strumming and picking on the guitar. I not a musician, am a real fan of the acoustic guitar, and enjoy virtually any level of ability. BB played melodic music that was easy on the ear. The notes were crisp and well placed. The volume was pleasing and allowed for conversation. His guitar skills sounded very good to this non-musician.

I give BB extra points for singing. He was clearly and understandably a little nervous and cannot sing as well as he can play. He stayed well within the limits of what his vocal chords allowed. He sang just loud enough to accompany and accentuate his guitar. Any louder and it would have been like Bob Dylan singing while having a root canal.

We had a great night out. The food and music were very good and the company even better.

Good going BB. It was a truly a solid performance. You do much better with music than commentary on town government.

*******

Note of disappointment: As his biggest fan I wish he came over and sat down with me. I was eagerly waiting for a chance to have my picture taken with him and to get an autograph. I even had a sharpie ready.

Being extremely shy and self conscience, I could not muster the will to overcome my fear and approach the man on the World Tour for the coveted autograph. I have resolved to go to Auckland, NZ when he plays there and ask.

anonymous said...

Where did the begining of this snow removal issue come from?

Anyone know who brought it to light at this time?

bogofree said...

Didn't someone say you were a "bad writer," Suo? Great review and a very good show.

As far as the snow plow issue it was brought to the attention of the BOS by new DPW commander Andrew Bagas.

For years some got the service and others did not, so when examining the budget I am sure this popped right out as a possible cost savings. So that starts the ball rolling or the plow plowing or not plowing.

A former Selectman, Adam "See ya" Bond will possibly front a taxpayer suit over this issue.
